Gen 17:1 KJV And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Psa 90:1-2 KJV <A Prayer of Moses the man of God.> Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Psa 139:1-16 KJV <To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.> O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Pro 5:21 KJV For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

Pro 15:3 KJV The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Isa 11:2 KJV And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

Jer 23:23-24 KJV 23 Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Joh 4:24 KJV God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

1Ti 1:17 KJV Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1Pe 1:15-16 KJV 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

1Jo 4:8 KJV He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Rev 19:6 KJV And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Exo 20:3 KJV Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Deu 6:4 KJV Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Isa 7:14 KJV Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isa 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isa 40:18 KJV To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?

Isa 40:25 KJV To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

Isa 41:4 KJV Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.

Isa 41:14 KJV Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Isa 41:20 KJV That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

Isa 42:8 KJV I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Isa 43:3 KJV For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Isa 43:10-15 KJV 10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. 12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God. 13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it? 14 Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships. 15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

Isa 44:6 KJV Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Isa 44:8 KJV Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Isa 44:24 KJV Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Isa 45:5 KJV I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

Isa 45:11-15 KJV 11 Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. 13 I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts. 14 Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. 15 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.

Isa 45:18 KJV For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Isa 45:21-23 KJV 21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. 22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. 23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

Isa 46:5 KJV To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

Isa 46:9-11 KJV 9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: 11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

Isa 47:4 KJV As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Isa 48:12-13 KJV 12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. 13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

Isa 48:17 KJV Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

Mal 2:10 KJV Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Mat 1:21-23 KJV 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Mar 12:29 KJV And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Joh 1:1 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:14 KJV And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Joh 10:30 KJV I and my Father are one.

2Co 5:19 KJV To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Gal 3:20 KJV Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

Eph 4:4-6 KJV 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Phi 2:6-11 KJV 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Col 1:15 KJV Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Col 2:8-10 KJV 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

1Ti 2:5 KJV For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

1Ti 3:16 KJV And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Tit 2:13 KJV Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Heb 1:1-4 KJV God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Jam 2:19 KJV Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

1Jo 2:20 KJV But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1Jo 5:20 KJV And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

Rev 1:8 KJV I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Gen 1:1 KJV In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Psa 90:2 KJV Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Isa 41:4 KJV Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.

Isa 44:6 KJV Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Act 17:22-30 KJV 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Heb 11:6 KJV But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Heb 13:8 KJV Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Philippians chapter 2 tells us that Jesus is in the form of God.

Phi 2:6-8 KJV 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

The Greek word for ‘form’ is ‘morphe’.

3444 morphe {mor-fay’}

Meaning: 1) the form by which a person or thing strikes the vision 2) external appearance

Jesus was the ‘morphe’ of God; the external appearance of God. Jesus was the appearance of God because he had the very nature of God- he was God Himself.

The Greek word for ‘equal’ is ‘isos’.

2470 isos {ee’-sos}

Meaning: 1) equal, in quantity or quality

The Scriptures tell us there is no one equal with God.

Isa 40:25 KJV To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

Isa 46:5 KJV To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

Isa 46:9 KJV Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

Since there in none that is equal with God, and Philippians 2:6 says that Jesus thought it not robbery to be equal with God, Jesus must be God.

Even though Jesus is God, and it was His prerogative to do as He willed, He did not hold on to these prerogatives. Instead, He was willing to lay His prerogatives aside and take on the form of a servant in order to become the sacrifice for our sins. Did He have to? No. He did this by His own grace. By His grace He willingly took on a human nature and submitted Himself to death on the cross.

Doesn’t this make two ‘persons’ in the Godhead? Doesn’t Jesus have the same nature as the Father? This wasn’t a divine ‘Son’ emptying Himself of divine attributes and becoming incarnate. While Jesus did ‘empty’ Himself of His divine prerogatives, He did not stop being God. He did not turn deity into humanity. He did not stop being the Father to become the Son. He was God manifest in flesh. He took upon Himself humanity, but He still had His divine nature. He had two natures- God and man. He is equal to God because He is God. The term ‘equal’ means that His nature is the nature of the Father. He never lost His divinity or attributes.

His dual nature explains how Jesus was exalted.

Phi 2:9-11 KJV 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

God exalted the man Jesus. The name of Jesus is above every name because it is the name of God manifest in flesh. The name of Jesus is the saving name.

Act 4:12 KJV Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Jesus is both God and man. Our God became a man to become our sacrifice for sins. Jesus is our God and savior.

1 John 3:1-6 is an interesting passage. It reveals that the Father was manifested as our Savior.

1Jo 3:1-6 KJV Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

This passage consistently refers to the Father as ‘He’ and ‘Him’ with no subject change. There is no change of antecedent. Each pronoun is referring to the Father.

In verse 1 the Father bestowed love upon us, and because of that we are called the sons of God. The world does not know us because it did not know the Father. There is no subject change. Verse 1 starts talking about the Father and continues talking about the Father.

1Jo 3:1 KJV Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

‘Him’ refers to the Father. Notice there is no other antecedent. Jesus is the one that came into the world and the world did not know him.

Joh 1:10-11 KJV 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

The next verse continues with the same antecedent.

1Jo 3:2 KJV Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

The subject continues with no subject change. ‘Him’ refers to the Father. Again, there is no other antecedent- no other possible pronoun for ‘Him’ to refer to. We know that Jesus is the one that will appear.

Rev 1:7 KJV Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

The passage continues with no change of antecedent.

1Jo 3:3 KJV And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

The next verse continues with the same anticendent.

1Jo 3:5 KJV And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

‘He’ still refers to the Father, but we know that Jesus is the one that was manifest to take away our sins.

Joh 1:29 KJV The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

1Jo 3:6 KJV Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

When was the Father manifested? In Jesus. Jesus is God the Father manifest in flesh to save us from our sins.

Just before his death, Jesus asked:

Mat 27:46 KJV And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Did God really forsake Jesus just as he was giving his life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world? Does this verse prove a separation between the Father and the Son? Did God leave Jesus on the cross just before he died? Did the Father separate Himself from the Son?

Some have said that the Spirit of God left Jesus. This is not possible because Jesus is God manifest in flesh.

1Ti 3:16 KJV And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Others have said that the Father left the Son. This would either mean that they are separate entities or that the Deity came out of the humanity and left the man Christ alone on the cross. The Scriptures tell us that God was in Christ during reconciliation.

2Co 5:19 KJV To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

God did not forsake Jesus when he was on the cross because Jesus was God. Jesus was God manifest in flesh to become the sacrifice for our sins. This does not mean that the Father suffered the pain of death because God is a Spirit and cannot die.

I have heard some say that God died on the cross. Jesus did not die as God. Jesus died as a man. If God could die in His deity He would not be God.

The Spirit of God did not leave the body of Jesus and allow him to die on the cross alone. It was not one person within the Godhead forsaking another person within the Godhead. This would have required each person to be a separate individual, either making each one 1/3 of God, or making three Gods. God could not have separated Himself from Jesus because Jesus was God.

Jesus took upon himself the sins of the world. For the first time, Jesus, a sinless man, felt what it was like to feel the judgment of God for sin. He felt sinful. He felt forsaken. Jesus did not sin, but he did feel the sins of the world. He took our place and felt our sin.

We have all sinned.

Rom 3:23 KJV For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

The penalty for sin is death.

Rom 6:23 KJV For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus took our place and suffered the death that we deserve for sin.

Rom 5:6-9 KJV 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Jesus, as a sinless man, freely took upon himself the sins of the world. He felt the judgment for sin so we don’t have to. Jesus died on the cross so we could have the free gift of salvation by the grace of God. He provided a way for salvation by buying it with his own blood.

The Old Testament uses the Hebrew word Echad to assert there is one God. Some have taken this to mean that God is one in number, while others have understood it to mean that God is one in unity. What does the word Echad mean?

‘echad {ekh-awd’} (0259)

Meaning: 1) one (number) 1a) one (number) 1b) each, every 1c) a certain 1d) an (indefinite article) 1e) only, once, once for all 1f) one…another, the one…the other, one after another, one by one 1g) first 1h) eleven (in combination), eleventh (ordinal)

Just as important as a definition is the word’s usage in context.

The Scriptures tell us there is one God.

Deu 6:4 KJV Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

The context of this verse is not describing a unity, but one single LORD.

The word Echad is used throughout the Old Testament to describe one in number. Here are some examples:

A list of Canaanite kings, with each king being described as a single king.

Jos 12:9-24 KJV <sup>9</sup> The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

<sup>10</sup> The king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;

<sup>11</sup> The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

<sup>12</sup> The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

<sup>13</sup> The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;

<sup>14</sup> The king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;

<sup>15</sup> The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

<sup>16</sup> The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;

<sup>17</sup> The king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;

<sup>18</sup> The king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;

<sup>19</sup> The king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;

<sup>20</sup> The king of Shimronmeron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;

<sup>21</sup> The king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;

<sup>22</sup> The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one;

<sup>23</sup> The king of Dor in the coast of Dor, one; the king of the nations of Gilgal, one;

24 The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.

The prophet Micah is described as being one man.

1Ki 22:8 KJV And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

Abraham was described as being one.

Eze 33:24 KJV Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.

A list of gates, with each gate being described as a single gate.

Eze 48:31-34 KJV 31 And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi.

32 And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.

33 And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.

34 At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.

The angel Michael was described as being one of the chief princes.

Dan 10:13 KJV But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

In each of these cases the word Echad is used to describe one in number. Especially in reference to God, Echad does not refer to a unity. God uses many words and phrases to speak of Himself in the singular. There are many examples of this in the Old Testament.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Isaiah 43:10-11 10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Isaiah 44:8 8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Isaiah 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Isaiah 45:21-22 21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. 22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

If God was a plural group of persons, He would have spoken as a plural group- using words such as we, our, and us. Instead, God used words to describe Himself as one in number, such as I, me, alone, none else, etc.

Verses that seem to describe a plurality are not describing the number of members within the Godhead. They are indeed describing a plurality- a plurality of God’s attributes (see Elohim).

It is clear from the context of Scripture that God is one in number. It is clearly God’s intent by His use of Echad that He is absolutely one in number.

While in the plains of Mamre, Abraham got a visit from three men. When Abraham saw them, he ran out to meet them. Abraham ran up to them and identified one of them as Lord. Some have used this passage to teach the trinity. Others have used this passage to teach tritheism. Was this an appearance of God? If so, how? Who were the three men that Abraham saw?

Let’s look at the passage:

(Gen 18:1-3 KJV) And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

In verse 22, two of the men leave for Sodom and Jehovah stays to talk to Abraham.

(Gen 18:22 KJV) And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

If we look at Genesis chapter 19 we see two angels arriving in Sodom.

Gen 19:1 KJV And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

This shows clearly that one of the men was Jehovah and the other two men were angels.

In verse 24 it almost seems like there are two LORDs, and many have used this verse to describe two persons within the Godhead, but there are too many verses that tell us there is one LORD (Dt 6:4, Mark 12:29, Eph 4:5, etc), so there must be another explanation. Let’s look at verse 24:

Gen 19:24 KJV Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

This isn’t one LORD on Earth asking another LORD in heaven to rain fire from heaven. This verse is simply stating that the fire was from the LORD and the LORD sent the fire. It’s actually a restatement in order to show that the fire is from the LORD.

This point is clearly seen in the NLT:

Gen 19:24 NLT Then the LORD rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah.

And in the NET:

Gen 19:24 NET Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. It was sent down from the sky by the LORD.

The fire was sent by the LORD. This verse doesn’t imply two LORDs, but it simply states and restates that the LORD sent the fire and brimstone.

Genesis 18:1-3 does not support three persons in the Godhead, nor does it support more than one God. Placing this verse in its proper context we see that God visited Abraham in a Theophany and was accompanied by two angels.

Likewise, Genesis 19:24 does not support more than one LORD. This verse does not contradict the many verses that tell us there is one LORD. It is simply a restatement.
