Hi Roy. I've been searching for another Dugan. The last Dugan I saw on eBay went for around $160, bonded leather. I want to start over with my marking. It's looking like I will have to settle for a new Thompson. I use a Cambridge wide margin, but I don't like the concordance that well and I don't like my own handwriting. A lot of the time, the Thompson already has what I would write in the margin anyway. I like the topics in the Thompson. It's looking like I will have to settle for a new Thompson. If I get one, I am considering only marking the marginal topics and leaving the text clean for reading.

Thanks for the great balance information. I also have a Dugan from years ago and it is without doubt my favorite all time study Bible. I also have a Thompsons, which I use, but have found at times that the chains only follow the thoughts and theology of the publishers, which can cause you to miss out on finding challenging references that he has left out. Whatever Bibel you end up using, it is important that you press in yourself to learn and grow in God's Word. Thanks for the great article.

This is such great advice. I often think of snippets and tidbits that I want to write in my bible, especially in the Greek NT, but I can seem to bring myself to do it. I have even considered purchasing a wide-margin bible for this reason.

For me it goes beyond the Bible. I can't seem to mark up any book. Even books I am studying for seminary I have a hard time marking pages.

Writing first else where is such an obvious, yet overlooked, and brilliant idea. Great Article.

Hi Paul. The Father and the Son are not one in the same, or interchangeable. The term 'Father' refers to Deity and the term 'Son' refers to the humanity of Jesus. They are not the same nature or aspect of Jesus. Jesus could speak as a man or as God. We see this all throughout Scripture. I cover John 14:23 in more detail in this article:

<a href="http://studiesinscripture.com/our-abode/" rel="nofollow">Our Abode</a>

Please take a look.

Thanks,

Randy

<strong>Randy,</strong>
<strong>If the Father and the Son were One Person instead of Two, Jesus would NEVER have said: "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and WE will come unto him, and make our abode with him." How do you explain the "we"? If your view is right, Jesus should have said "I," not "we."</strong>

Lynn,

Great question. It's really difficult to give a specific answer because each situation is different. For example, some topics have more theological bias than others. It does help to see what others have written. I try to allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, but when I get stuck I read what others have to say. I also try to read from more than one point of view (if possible). Then I analyze what they've said by comparing to all the Scriptures I can find on that topic (making sure to keep them in their proper context). Comparing what others say to Scripture is a good study method too. I know what you mean about 8 year-olds. My cousin's oldest boy can ask some good questions that make my brain hurt :0)

At what point would you recommend turning to "real" commentaries (published, or online, perhaps)? Or would those be used for a different purpose? I get stuck on the who/what/where/when/why questions and I cheat by looking to see what others have written. Although I'm better than I used to be at journalling about the verses that jump out at me, I know I need to do more of the "deeper" work for myself.
I agree about teaching others - I learned *so* much when I was going through the Bible (homeschooling) with our son. Nothing like having an 8 year old ask a question you can't answer...

True, the most important thing is that we have our name in the Lambs Book of Life, and once we see HIM face to face, we ak him all of our un answered questions.
This is century old discussion. There are some believers that interpret the scriptures to indacte that their are 2 persons in the Godhead.
I have one question for those who believe in the trinity. Which person of the trinity overshadowed Mary for the mirraculous conception. The Bible says that she would be found with child of the Holy Ghost. (paraphrazing). Where I come from, the one causing the conception is refered to as the Father. One more question, If the 3 are coequal, where is the Holy Ghost in the Book of Revelation, past the 2nd chapter?
