The existence of God is not something that can be proven using scientific methods, but we can use these same scientific laws and see that the very existence of the Universe requires an all-powerful Creator. The fact that the Universe exists defies scientific law. There are only three options for the existence of the Universe:

It was created

It created itself

It has always existed

None of these is a scientific statement. If any of these arguments are chosen, then God exists by default. If the Universe was created, then the Creator by definition is God because only God can create something from nothing. If the Universe created itself, then the Universe by definition is God because only God can create something from nothing. If the Universe has always existed, then the Universe is God because only God is eternal. Is there another realistic option? No. All three of these options require scientific laws to be broken (for example- the laws of Thermo Dynamics). Believing any of them requires faith- but not a blind faith.

Argument from Cosmology

Creation itself shows that there is an all-powerful, all-knowing Creator.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. (Psa 19:1 KJV)

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (Rom 1:20 KJV)

Argument from Teleology

The Universe has order and design. Even the simplest cell is too complex to have come about by blind chance. It required intelligent input (as every scientific experiment has shown, because intelligent Scientists themselves give input to their own experiments). Even the Laws of the Universe have order. If not, we should not expect gravity to work the same from one day to the next.

Argument from Scientific Law

The law of Biogenesis says that life can only come from life. The idea that life can spontaneously generate from non-life has never been observed, repeated, or verified, which means it is not scientific (Moehlenpah, p.47). There are also genetic barriers that will not allow one type of animal to slowly become another type of animal. We expect and observe small changes over time as animals adapt to their environments, but this is not the same thing as an animal changing from one type of animal to another.

Where did the Universe come from? Where did the matter in the big bang come from? Where did space come from? The first law of Thermodynamics says that matter cannot be created or destroyed (Moehlenpah, p.52). This means that nothing new can be created through evolution (Moehlenpah, p.52). This also means that nothing came into existence without God, for God is the only being or power that can overcome the first law of Thermodynamics.

The second law of Thermodynamics shows that everything moves toward disorder (Moehlenpah, p.52). Random chance cannot bring order to a big bang on the level that would be needed to create a universe full of stars, planets, and life on Earth. It takes intelligent input to create a Universe that has order.

Scientific laws are not by chance. They are not random – they can be trusted. Where did they come from? There are always alternate explanations given, but none of them work outside of the laws of the Universe- and those laws had to be laid down by a being that was greater than the scientific laws themselves. Laws cannot be changed. If a scientific law can defy a scientific law, one of them is no longer a law. The lack of an alternate explanation that doesn’t defy scientific law requires the existence of God.

Ham and Hall evaluate Britt Beemer’s America’s Research Group’s poll of 200 Christian colleges and universities on core faith questions, and the results are startling.

College staff was interviewed to find their stance on core Biblical issues with a heavy emphasis on young Earth Creation. The college’s curriculum is examined for topics such as the literal Genesis account of Creation, the flood of Noah, evolution and the depth of evolution taught, the inspiration, inerrancy, and infallibility of Scripture, and whether or not the Bible is literally true, and many more. These same questions are asked across campuses. The results reveal the confusion among students and faculty alike.

There are many charts and graphs showing how all these topics line up and where the problems are. Ham and Hall give the student’s tools to prepare them for their many battles they’re bound to find themselves in, including topics such as how to be ready to give an answer and how to choose the right college.

In the back are several appendixes that provide great tools for students. Appendix B is an explanation of what a worldview is and examines the Christian worldview. Appendix A explores some of the compromises that some theologians and Seminary professors have developed to co-exist with evolution. Appendix C is a rebuttal to the ‘Documentary Hypothesis’ – the idea that Moses did not write the first five books of the Bible, but he was just an editor that compiled various writings. Appendix D is a questionnaire that can be given to a college or church to discover what they truly believe and stand on.

New Leaf Publishers provided this book free for review. I was not required to give a positive review- only an honest review.

Joh 1:3 KJV All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Joh 1:10 KJV He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

1Co 8:6 KJV But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

Eph 3:9 KJV And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Col 1:12-17 KJV 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Heb 1:1-2 KJV God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, <sup>2</sup> Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 1:8-12 KJV But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

Rev 4:8-11 KJV 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Rev 10:6 KJV And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

Rev 14:6-7 KJV 6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Rev 21:5-7 KJV 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Gen 1:1 KJV In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Exo 20:11 KJV For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Neh 9:6 KJV Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

Job 12:7-9 KJV 7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: 8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. 9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?

Psa 24:2 KJV For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

Psa 33:6 KJV By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

Psa 95:5 KJV The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

Psa 102:25 KJV Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

Psa 104:5 KJV Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Isa 40:28 KJV Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Isa 45:12 KJV I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

Isa 48:13 KJV Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

Act 4:24 KJV And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

Act 7:50 KJV Hath not my hand made all these things?

Act 14:15 KJV And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

Act 17:24 KJV God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Dembski and Jonathan Witt describes what intelligent design really is. The purpose of the book is to define intelligent design and debunk any misconceptions using scientific research.

The authors show why the universe and everything in it seem to be designed by answering the question, are the things of nature the product of mindless forces alone, or did creative reason play a role? They build an argument for intelligent design using science and logic in a way that is easy to follow and understand. They give many examples and analogies that make sense, giving the reader a solid foundation in the concepts of intelligent design.

The science in this book includes many references to other writings such as Michael Behe’s Darwin’s Black Box and Dembski’s own Design Inference, among many others. Scientific topics include problems with Darwinism, the laws of probability, and shows research by many scientists.

The logical arguments build on fallacious analogies that work really well to demonstrate the point. For example, someone seeing Mount Rushmore and coming to the conclusion that it is a natural phenomenon. Other examples used include The Grand Canyon and the shape of Mona Lisa painted into grass. These examples show logical conclusions of something that looks designed.

The book includes current research by design theorists that shows original research that tests claims of materialism and intelligent design.

The information is not bogged down with incomprehensible jargon. Instead, it is very readable, understandable, and memorable. It is a very easy book to recommend, both as an introduction and as a solid resource for intelligent design. Five out of five stars!

I would like to thank InterVarsity Press for this free review copy. My opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.

The scriptures tell us that God created all things. We are the special creation of God. Some verses say Jesus created all things, while other verses say the Father is the creator of all things. Is this two ‘persons’ that are creating the universe together? Is this a contradiction? If this is not a contradiction in Scripture, then this brings us to this question: who is our Creator?

Creation is not the cooperative work of a group of ‘people’. The Scriptures are clear there is only one Creator- Jehovah our LORD.

Isaiah 37:16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

Isaiah 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Malachi 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?

The Bible describes the one Creator as Jesus.

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:16-17 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Hebrews 1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

How is Jesus the Creator?

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, <sup>2</sup> Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Notice this verse doesn’t say the Son created. It says that God created by the Son. This verse makes a distinction between God and the Son of God. God created with the Son in view (Bernard, 1994, p. 55). Jesus did not create as the Son of God. The Son wasn’t born until Bethlehem.

1 Corinthians 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

This verse shows us that the Father is the Creator, and then explains that Jesus is the Creator. Jesus is the Creator as God. From his Deity, he is the Creator of all things. Jesus did not create from his sonship- his humanity. Jesus is the Creator from his Deity, as God. The one who was later manifest in flesh is the Creator.

Jesus is the Creator because he is Jehovah, the one God manifest in flesh.

John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

John 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The Creator, the one true God, was manifest in flesh to become our redeemer. As our God, He is the Creator that would manifest himself in flesh to become our Savior. He did not create as the Savior- as the Son of God. He created as God. Jesus Christ is our God, our Savior, our Redeemer, our LORD, our Mediator, our Comforter, and our Father. All of this is possible because He was first our Creator.

Rubik’s Cube is a simple puzzle, containing six sides with nine squares on each side. The cube can be twisted and turned, mixing up the puzzle, creating many combinations. Twisting the cube in random patterns, we will never see all of the 43 quintillion combinations but the cube can be solved in a matter of minutes, or even seconds, using logical patterns. Logic and intelligence brings order; random chance will only bring chaos.

Through the complex laws of probability, Rubik’s Cube supports the theory of Creation while disproving the theory of evolution. The basis behind the theory of evolution is that things move from simple to complex by random chance (Ferrel, 2001, p. 777). The theory of evolution claims that random chance is responsible for the existence of life and the universe. Marshall Brain states:

Billions of years ago, according to the theory of evolution, chemicals randomly organized themselves into a self-replicating molecule. This spark of life was the seed of every living thing we see today (as well as those we no longer see, like dinosaurs). That simplest life form, through the processes of mutation and natural selection, has been shaped into every living species on the planet (n.d., How evolution works).

Marshall goes on to say, “Through random mutations and natural selection, evolution has produced mammals of striking diversity from that humble starting point” (n.d., How evolution works). The laws of probability cannot allow this to happen any more than randomly twisting Rubik’s Cube would result in a solved puzzle.

Dr. Henry Morris of the Institute for Creation Research explains the difficulties of probability of random chance:

For example, consider a series of ten flash cards, numbered from one to ten. If these are thoroughly and randomly mixed, and then laid out successively in a linear array along the table, it would be extremely unlikely that the numbers would fall out in order from one to ten. Actually, there are 3,628,800 different ways in which these numbers could be arranged, so that the “probability” of this particular ordered arrangement is only one in 3,628,800. (This number is “ten factorial,” written as 10!, and can be calculated simply by multiplying together all the numbers from one to ten.) (2004, Probability).

Random twisting would not even allow you to see all 43 quintillion (43,252,003,274,489,856,000 to be exact) combinations. As Joyner explains, “Twisting the cube at random would never allow every combination to be seen, no matter how long the cube is twisted and turned” (2001, Mathematics of Rubik’s Cube). Rubik’s Cube cannot be solved by random twists; however, using intelligently designed patterns, Rubik’s Cube can be solved within seconds.

Rubik’s Cube demonstrates the impossibility of random chance bringing order to chaos. As explained by Henry Morris, “Creationists maintain that highly ordered systems could not arise by chance, since random processes generate disorder rather than order, simplicity rather than complexity and confusion instead of ‘information’” (2004, Probability). It took intelligence, not random chance, to create the universe and everything in it. Likewise, it takes intelligence, not random chance, to solve Rubik’s Cube. Rubik’s Cube supports intelligent design.

Henry Morris goes on to say, “..the probability of the chance occurrence of any kind of “information” in a system is very small, and that this probability rapidly diminishes as the complexity of the system increases” (2004, Probability). Morris concludes, “…whenever one sees any kind of real ordered complexity in nature, particularly as found in living systems, he can be sure this complexity was designed” (2004, Probability). The universe is no more a product of random occurrence as is Rubik’s Cube.

Comparing the cubes that make up Rubik’s Cube to DNA, we see that Rubik’s Cube, when taken apart, would reach just a couple of feet across the table. DNA, on the other hand, would stretch to the moon and back 130,000 times (Stanford, 2004). If just a couple of feet of cubes could not happen by chance, or requires intelligence to solve, it is not possible, let alone probable, that DNA could happen by random chance.

Billions of years of random chance did not result in Erno Rubik’s puzzle. Billions of years of evolution did not bring the universe into existence. The existence of Rubik’s Cube demands a designer. More importantly, the existence of the universe demands a designer. There is an intelligent, loving creator and we are his special creation.
