John on Patmos
“I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Rev 1:9 KJV)
John received this revelation from Jesus while he was on the Isle of Patmos. Patmos is an island in the Aegean Sea, 40 miles southwest of Ephesus.
John was exiled for the word of God and his testimony. He was exiled because he remained faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ. External evidence shows that John was exiled to Patmos by the Roman emperor Domitian from A.D. 81 – 96. This places the writing of the book of Revelation around A.D. 95.
