A Pillar
“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God:” (Rev 3:12a KJV)
Again Jesus gives a promise to him that overcomes. This promise is that the overcomer will be a pillar in the temple of God. This is not a literal pillar or temple, but a permanent place in God’s kingdom- a promise of everlasting life.
Pillar – 4769 στῦλος stulos {stoo’-los}
Meaning: 1) a pillar 2) a column 2a) pillars of fire i.e. flames rising like pillars 3) a prop or support
Temple – 3485 ναός naos {nah-os’}
Meaning: 1) used of the temple at Jerusalem, but only of the sacred edifice (or sanctuary) itself, consisting of the Holy place and the Holy of Holies (in classical Greek it is used of the sanctuary or cell of the temple, where the image of gold was placed which is distinguished from the whole enclosure)
Jesus himself is the temple.
“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Rev 21:2 KJV)
“And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” (Rev 21:22 KJV)
My New Name
“and I will write upon him my new name.”
(Rev 3:12b KJV)
Jesus has a name that no one knows but Him.
“His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.” (Rev 19:12 KJV)
There are still things that God has not revealed.
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deu 29:29 KJV)
Hear
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
(Rev 3:13 KJV)
Again Jesus pleads with His people to overcome. The promises of everlasting life are only to those that live overcoming lives.
