Flood

15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.”

(Rev 12:15-16 KJV)

Eagle’s Wings

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.”

(Rev 12:13-14 KJV)

After being cast down to Earth, Satan’s goal is to punish God through a strong persecution of Israel. God protects Israel and makes a way for her to flee to the wilderness.

The Devil has a Short Time

“Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” (Rev 12:12 KJV)

The middle of the tribulation period marks the turning point where Satan realizes that he doesn’t have much time left. He has been cast down to Earth and releases the most savage attack possible on mankind. Jesus spoke of this as the greatest time of tribulation.

War in Heaven

7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Into the Wilderness

“And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” (Rev 12:6 KJV)

Satan will unleash such a devastating torment upon Israel that they will have to flee into the wilderness. God has prepared a place to refuge for Israel where they will stay 1260 days- which is 3.5 years (Israel’s year is 360 days).

A Man Child

“And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.” (Rev 12:5 KJV)

We see the child in verse 2, but no information is given about the identity of the man child. Here we see the man child will rule all nations with a rod of iron and the child is caught up to God and His throne in heaven. Many see the man child as Jesus. The child ruling with a rod of iron and being caught up to heaven as referring to the ascension of Jesus gives support to this view.

A Third of the Stars of Heaven

“And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth:” (Rev 12:4a KJV)

Many see this as the original fall of Satan when he persuaded a third of the angels to follow him. This could be true even is this passage is not a parenthetical account of past events. It could just be identifying what he had done. It could also refer to his destructive power against those that oppose him. If this is the case, John could be using the angels as examples of Satan’s destructive power.

The Great Red Dragon

” And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.” (Rev 12:3 KJV)

The great red dragon is of course Satan. It is interesting that the dragon is used as a symbol of Satan. In order to be used as a symbol, John had to have known about dragons and dragon legends.

The seven heads could refer to the seven world kingdoms from Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Media, Persia, Greece, and Rome.

With Child

“And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.” (Rev 12:2 KJV)

Many see the child as Jesus. This view would require chapter 12 to be past events which interrupts the sequences of the wrath of God to tell us a history that can only be symbolic and doesn’t fit with the rest of the book or with any historical accounts of the life of Jesus.

A Great Wonder in Heaven

“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:” (Rev 12:1 KJV)

The woman clothed in the sun is Israel. This description in a parallel of the dream of Joseph in Genesis.

9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

The Ark in Heaven

“And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.” (Rev 11:19 KJV)

Moses was instructed to build the Ark of the Covenant after the pattern of a heavenly ark, the ark of His testament. This heavenly ark evidently resides in a temple in heaven, which is now opened.
